As the singles of summer have faded, sophomore Ellie Garrett is more than excited for the new music coming out this fall. “One Direction’s new album Take Me Home is released this November!” she said. “I’m getting it Oct. 8 because I specially ordered it from the U.K.”

One Direction is not the only one with new music; fall marks the season for album releases from top artists in the alternative, country, pop and electronic genres. September starts off the trend with new albums throughout the month in all these genres.

Alternative

After a five-year hiatus, Matchbox Twenty released their new album,  North, on Sept. 4. The song “She’s So Mean”, which was up for sale a little earlier than the rest of the album, already made the top 50 songs list on iTunes. Now, “Overjoyed” is rising in popularity.

Alternative fan and junior Johnny Osterndorf thought the album spoke true to the band’s style. “Songs like ‘She’s So Mean’ remind me of the old Matchbox Twenty,” he said. “After hearing the album, I’m still team Rob Thomas.”

Green day, another alternative band but with a punk edge, is also returning to the music world with a new album, ¡Uno!, out Sept. 25. “My dad and I have been listening to Green day forever,” Johnny said. “I hope that this new album is more like their first album Dookie and less like their most recent album 21st Century Breakdown.”

In addition to ¡Uno!, Green day is releasing two more albums by Jan. 15, originally titled ¡Dos! and ¡Tré!. Senior Juliet Guynn hopes the three almost simultaneous albums won’t draw away from the quality of the music. “Hopefully releasing three albums won’t mean they spent less time perfecting each song,” she said.

Country

Though they’ve been around since 2002, 106.3 listeners (the local country radio station) know the band Little Big Town for their hit singles “Boondocks” and, more recently, “Pontoon”. Senior Emma Gruber has been following Little Big Town since 2005. “The first song I heard by Little Big Town was ‘Boondocks’,” she said. “The fast beat and strong harmony between the band members got me hooked.”

Their new album Tornado has been available since Sept. 11 with the hopes of leading to more top songs like the early album release “Pontoon.” “Even though it came out as a single first, ‘Pontoon’ is still my favorite song on the new album,” Emma said. “It’s held my attention more than the others have.”

Pop

It’s hard to turn on the radio and not hear P!nk belting out “Blow Me (One Last Kiss)”. From her hit songs “So What” to “F*cking Perfect”, P!nk has been a staple of the pop billboard list for the past couple of years. Her next album The Truth About Love came out Sept. 18. “P!nk is fun!” senior Harrison Besser said. “I’m happy that she keeps remaining true to her roots, like back when she sang ‘Get The Party Started’.”

Electronic

Whether you call it electronic, techno or dance (as iTunes classifies it), Deadmau5 is the epitome of the genre. The mau5, as it is sometimes called, has a new album >album title goes here< out Sept. 25. “Deadmau5 is known for songs with a strong bass,” Ellie said. “As long as their new album is like their previous tracks, they’ll be successful.”

While it may be unknown why artists wait until the fall to release their albums, music lovers everywhere can rejoice at the influx in new music. Cher Lloyd, Taylor Swift, Aerosmith and will.i.am are just a taste of the new tracks to come. “I think artists release their singles in the summer to draw up anticipation for the albums in the fall,” Emma said. “Whatever the reason really is, it definitely works.”
