Outer Banks is an American action-adventure mystery teen drama web TV series that premiered on Netflix on April 15, 2020, and has quickly become one of the most popular shows, trending on Instagram, TikTok, and other social media platforms. The show follows a group of teenagers in the Outer Banks of North Carolina called “Pogues,” and are considered to be of the lower class. They are determined to find out what happened to the missing father of the group’s “leader”, John B. Along this journey, they overcome many obstacles that cause tension between their friendships, and there is a common theme of overthrowing the rich or the “Kooks” who always unfairly get what they want. Through this, they discover more about themselves and form new relationships that bridge the gap between the Pogues and the Kooks. At the same time, they find answers from the past that send them on a treasure hunt that could change their lives forever, and it connects all of the mysteries on the island.

Outer Banks has been trending on Tiktok, with multiple users saying that the new “looks” for summer 2020 will be inspired by fashion from the show. The series showcases a very beachy style, with the main characters surfing, boating, and giving off a relaxed summer vibe. One of the main characters, Kiara, or “Ki” has inspired many to be wearing their long curly hair in a half up half down bun which she debuts in the first episode. Her lazy beach style of denim shorts, crop tops, graphic teas, and beads in her hair has blasted the internet, and bandanas have also become a trend as they depict that “pirate” look that the Outer Banks supports. Many have also taken on the “John B. look,” wearing nantucket red baseball hats backwards and loose beach shirts and shorts. Sarah Cameron, a Kook, has also inspired many with her preppy yet still beachy look, definitely portraying her role as a Kook in the series very well. Stores like Urban Outfitters, Shein, Billabong and many more offer clothing that follows this trend, essentially setting up the summer to be a real-life version of this new and exciting television series.
