This year, the Math Help Desk joins the list of resources available to students in need. It is located in the Math Department, and staffed throughout the day with different Math teachers.
The Math Help Desk is designed to be a last resort for students who need help. “Always try to reach your teacher if you need help with a problem. The math help desk is for students who cannot get to their teacher.” Anthony Bloss, head of the math department, said.
Ms. Lee, another Math teacher, noted that students should still come in for help after school with their teacher if they need help with a concept or idea. “The math help desk is for students who are having trouble with a specific problem to drop in and get help.” Ms. Lee said.
While the staffing system of alternating teachers is new this year, the math department did have a teacher for students to talk to last year. “ The last 3 years we had someone in here full time, but that person isn’t here anymore, so the math department thought we needed another resource for students who needed help.” Ms. Lee said.
Some students may feel embarrassed about the prospect of needing extra help. “ I do think so, and I think that’s why we haven’t had many students just yet.” Ms. Lee said.
Ms.Lee says that students shouldn’t turn down help if they need it, however embarrassing.” “It takes a few times for students to come in before they find their confidence.”, she said.
Mr. Bloss, however, is optimistic for the future of the Math Help Desk. “We hope the Math Help Desk will help a range of students with problems they have in Math,” Mr. Bloss said.
