On June 5 the senior class was able to take time from their hectic schedules to give back, let loose and spend a day of fun with the kids from Edison School in Bridgeport CT. “ This day was mainly about putting smiles on the faces of kids who were less fortunate than us,” senior Bea Eppler said. “It is such an amazing feeling knowing that you made someone else happy”.
Senior Service day has been a tradition at NCHS for 20 years and is something most students at the high school look forward to from the time they are freshman. “I remember seeing pictures of the seniors with all the little kids, face painting and playing games,” senior Madison Boniface said. “ I am such a kid person, I couldn’t wait until it was our turn.”
The class of 2013’s turn came on June 3rd when an assembly was held to discuss the day of service. “ It is nice to take time out of our busy schedules and help others,” senior Jack Isherwood said. “ It also makes me reflect on how lucky I was growing up.” At the assembly, seniors and administrators met to talk about the dynamics of Senior Service Day and the kind of activities that would occur.
“Activities are divided up according to age,” Priscilla Schulz, head of Senior Service Day, said. “Kindergarten through third grade does more relay race type activities, while fourth through sixth grade do more games.” Activities also included kickball, soccer, tug- a-war and potato sac races.
At 8:30 Wednesday morning, the senior class met in the gym to discuss the day and begin setting up. Based on individual interests, the students volunteered for the activities they wanted to host and created large groups for each station. At 10 a.m, K- 6th grade students from Edison School arrived at the track field. Senior Bobby Erickson explained why Senior Service Day meant so much to him. “My favorite part of the day was getting to know the kids through the activities, I think it is great that our school does this.”
Besides being able to give back and getting to know the kids the day was also a great bonding experience for the soon to be graduates. “ I’m just looking forward to spending the day bonding with the rest of the seniors and giving these kids an awesome field day,” said student body president Will Hennessy.
With graduation right around the corner and the hectic schedules of most seniors, time seems to be flying by, “ Service day brought our class together for one of the last times before graduation” said senior Keith Sigman “ and there is nothing better than being able to bond with your classmates over doing something good for the community.”
Senior Service Day presented senior Molly Joyce with a whole new meaning of the word service. “ I went into the day with a positive attitude,” Molly said. “But I never expected ending the day with this whole new perspective on giving back and helping others, I’m so thankful for this opportunity.”
Other seniors agreed with Molly, feeling that the day of service changed them and left them feeling melancholy about the end of the year. “ Not only did this great day go by too fast,” said senior Tripper Saitta “ but the whole year looking back just went by so quick, it feels like yesterday I was a freshman.”
After having lunch with the kids and bringing them to the busses senior Stephanie Torromeo felt it difficult to say goodbye. “ When we said good bye to them it was sad to see a few of them crying, it just shows how much this day really means to them.”
Not only did the service mean a lot to the kids but the seniors as well, student body president explained why it meant a lot to the seniors, “ Making someone else happy and bonding with your classmates while doing so,” he said “ This was one of the many great ways in ending the year.”
