In a town like New Canaan, choosing clothing can get complicated. It’s important to know when the mixing too many JCrew and Vineyard pieces together can make you look like a Ken doll, and when your WASPy-casual Burberry cardigan goes too far. As much as I appreciate a good patchwork belt and Jack Wills back pack, it is imperative that we incorporate more athletic pieces into our wardrobe, every once in a while. That’s when we go to Patagonia.
The possibilities are endless with the Patagonia Company. It has long stood as the gold standard for athletes and hikers, and business models similarly. With hundreds of different things to buy, and with only a certain amount of money in your gold-stitched Rugby wallet, how can you ever narrow it down? The trick is to find the right ‘gonia for you!
Seasons. Considering the month of the year should be the first thing considered when standing in the front of the Patagonia store. Maybe you want something just for this month, or maybe you want a year-round piece. If you want an item that can be worn throughout the year, I would recommend a “Better Sweater” vest. They come in gray, stone, walnut, black and red. These lightweight throw-overs can be worn over flannels, long sleeve shirts, oxfords, polo shirts and rugby’s. With such versatility, what else could you ask for? However, if you’re looking for warmth you may want to check another aisle.
For those of you who are considering moving to Florida during these awful CT winter months, cancel your flights because there IS a solution. Patagonia offers dozens of cold weather down jackets, the most popular being the Nano Puff Hoodie that will have you leaving the house without dread. Both Windproof and water-resistant, these full zip jackets are made with warmth in mind. It’s basically like wearing a neon marshmallow with heat insulins.
Still not happy…go for the fleeces. Patagonia Snap-T fleeces are legendary for their softness, warmth and unparallel comfort and will last way beyond your expectations. This iconic piece is offered in every earth-toned color and if you’re feeling a little crazy, are sold in a retro khaki pattern, as well as channel blue! Wear it over a t-shirt or under a Barbour. Their neutral color offerings make it really easy to mix in match, and the fuzzy comfort won’t want to be let go of all year long. I’m pretty sure I was wearing my tan one in August.
If you do still not love the clothing, Patagonia has an amazing selection of gear and accessories. Be sure to look for the super durable crossover backpacks that can be used for school, work, gym clothing or whatever else you’d want. Patagonia also sells great water bottles, duffle bags and blankets.
Add some novelty to your wardrobe and give Patagonia a try. You wont be sorry when you’re casually walking into school at 7:20, while your classmates in Elon sweatshirts are sprinting for their life.
