Entering the season short three key athletes, the varsity cheerleading team was forced to work around their multiple injuries. However, the girls overcame their obstacles, placing seventh out of 16 teams in the Fairfield Interscholastic Athletic Conference (FCIAC) competition.
Missing so many athletes, the girls had to refigure many of the routines to fit their team. “At the start of the winter season there were several girls injured including Ali Tubridy, Katie O’Sullivan and Katherine Luciano,” junior Elena Kyriakos explains. “Since we knew they would be out for the rest of the season, we had a realistic idea of how well we would do.”
However, on Feb. 2 the girls delivered a sharp and clean FCIAC performance, scoring high points in the dance and motion category. The varsity stunt group that included sophomore Morgan Campbell, junior Elena Kyriakos and seniors Bess Howard, Sara Levine and Emily Luciano placed fourth, tying with Wilton and Trumbull. Individually, Kyriakos and sophomore Bridget Callahan earned spots on the all-FCIAC team.
The girls continued their success at the Best Cheerleading Competition on Mar. 2 in New Milford where their varsity stunt group took home gold, placing first. The girls scored high in all categories, including stunt execution, pyramids and creativity. As a whole, the team placed seventh, beating out teams from Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and New York.
Overall, the girls were very happy with their performance this year. “Our team this year has been great and is always rolling with the punches. Every single person has improved tremendously this year in every aspect of cheerleading,” Elena said. “I am so proud of how everyone gives 100% at practice and never loses faith in each other.”
