On Wednesday, March 16, the boys hockey team suffered a heartbreaking loss to St. Joe’s in the state championship semifinals, ending their long-awaited run at perfection.

The last time the boy’s hockey team won the state championship was 1972. Since then, it’s been 38 years of frustration for the NCHS fans who have seen their team appear to be destined to win a state championship time and time again, only to fall short at the last minute.

With just 15 minutes left to play in the FCIAC Championship game against St. Joseph last weekend, hopes of an undefeated season and a conference championship for the Rams started to fade as they entered the 3rd period trailing 3-1. Thanks to goals by juniors Dylan Hart and Jake Granito, the game was tied, with a few minutes left in the game, bringing the New Canaan crowd back to life. Two disallowed goals in the final 2:30 of the third period, one for each team, kept the game at a 3-3 tie, and the FCIAC Championship was to be decided in sudden death overtime.

By the time the Rams took a 5-0 lead by the end of the first period, the Rams’ FCIAC chances were all but assured. The 7-1 massacre at the Darien Ice Rink, the Rams’ fifth FCIAC Championship victory in the past seven years, is illustrative of the Rams’ incredible season. They have been absolutely unstoppable with a 22-1 record.
