Come, see, conquer art

“Do you ever get tired of this view?” I inquire, while gazing at the glorious Duomo of Florence, situated just outside my Aunt Letizia’s apartment window. Glancing fleetingly at the same scene I rejoice and she answers, “Eh, I guess I’ve gotten used to it. I just don’t even really notice anymore.”

And so, as I spent my summer, not as a lifeguard, not as a camp counselor, but as both a tour guide and a tourist, I began taking note of some interactions with art.

A summer spent intensely artistic

Immersed 24/7 in a pool of artistic wonderment, I spent eight straight weeks up in New Milford, Connecticut at Buck’s Rock Creative and Performing Arts Camp. This was my fourth summer at the camp. Being a Counselor in Training (CIT), I also kept a job half the day at the painting studio where I worked helping children paint and draw in a variety of medias.

The mystery of StuCo and voting processes

Amidst thoughts of an impending math final, my teacher casually mentions a “Student Council assembly” next period. I blindly follow a lackluster mob into the auditorium, merely to witness a series of prom-is-going-to-be-great speeches. While most are well delivered and the students are respectable members of their class, the passive crowd refuses to grant them any speck of interest. Later the same day pitiful ballots are passed out like busy-work homework, and my classmates vote with wary eyes plastered to their neighbors’ desk, thus completing an annual round of high school democracy.
