First introduced as an independent study project, the Financial Literacy class was launched this year. The course aims to help students achieve their goals through prudent and informed management of their financial resources. Today, Financial Literacy is offered to high schoolers in thirteen states and mandatory for them to take in nine.

NCHS Theatre kicks off the season with laughter

From Oct. 21-23, the Drama Department will start off its new season with The Seussification of Romeo and Juliet and The Rules of Comedy. Both are one-act, 40-minute comedies that turn the traditional story of Romeo and Juliet upside down.

The Drama Department has been performing serious and dramatic plays for the past three years. This year, they plan to incorporate comedy. “It was time to lighten up the acts,” Theatre Director Deirdre Alexander said.

The Zumba revolution spreads like wildfire

Have you ever taken a casual stroll past the New Balance store in town or have been working out at the YMCA and been rudely interrupted by the screams of Shakira and pounding bass of Pitbull? You’re either hearing things or right around the corner from a Zumba class.

Zumba is a dance fitness program created in Colombia in the 1990s by a dancer and choreographer named Alberto “Beto” Perez. Zumba uses latin dance moves and music in an effort to make working out more fun and less of a chore. Tracking device reports overstated

“We’re calling all the students in the auditorium and the lights will go off. The students will fall asleep and wake up 15-20 minutes later with a pain in the back of their head. They will now be tracked wherever they go.”

This is how Principal Tony Pavia described a proposal to track students’ activity based on the media perspective. Recent nationwide news reports have been presenting the sensational story that the New Canaan school district will be planting tracking chips on students’ identification cards. However, the NCPS administration says that the reality is much different.

Freshly baked cafeteria foods entice students

In the lounge, the main center of activity in the first part of the day and lunch is the cafeteria. Beyond the three cash registers awaits a large variety of food in a number of sections. This year, personalized ice cream was added to the selection with two new MooBella Machines.

What are the secrets behind the food, behind the variety? The choice of the food that goes into the cafeteria is determined based on what the students want and what would be the best for them. “We try to find out what’s popular with the kids and what’s healthy,” Director of Food Services, Bruce Gluck, said. “We also take suggestions from students.”
