Rather than the typical mother-daughter charity league that can be found throughout the country, the Service League of Boys (SLOBs) of New Canaan is comprised of sons and parents of both sexes. Equally unique, SLOBs’ board of representatives is made up of both adolescents and adults, where sons and parents share leadership positions and attend meetings together.

(Don’t only) blame it on the alcohol
Teen drinking has been front-page news this past week. “Outback event shut down due to drunken youths,” “Teen Drinking: Police shut down dance at the Outback,” and “Intoxicated teens shut down Outback dance” are headlines from the New Canaan Advertiser, New Canaan Patch, and New Canaan News, respectively, used to comment on the annual Rave Outback dance hosted by the YMCA “youth leaders” as well as the Outback Student Governing Board (SGB).
Marijuana is more than just a ‘little thing between friends’

In the past few months, there have been a number of drug-related disciplinary actions. In one case, there was a drug-related expulsion, and in another, a drug-related punishment was downgraded. On Feb. 28, a student was arrested from a November charge of selling marijuana.
“In my opinion, there has been an inordinate number of suspensions relating to marijuana, whether it is an issue due to direct use or something we found out or having to do with the police,” Principal Tony Pavia said. “We’re seeing a marijuana that’s different than the ‘old’ drug; it’s not just a harmless teenage experiment.”
Fire Station hosts St. Baldrick’s head shaving event for childhood cancers

On Saturday, Mar. 12, the New Canaan Fire Company No. 1 hosted the town’s second annual St. Baldrick’s Foundation fundraiser at the fire station. The charity is run by volunteers aimed at raising money for and awareness of childhood cancers. In recent years, students have shaved their heads during March as a nod St. Baldrick’s.
Girls’ Hockey Wins Fifth State Championship in Six Years

On March 5, the girls hockey team beat the Ridgefield Tigers in a 7-2 rout to win their fifth state championship in six years. In a year where the Rams went 23-1 and won the FCIAC championship, the State Championship was the cherry on top of what has been one of the most impressive seasons in the team’s illustrious history.
