The Connecticut Academic Performance Tests, or CAPTs, begin Friday, Mar. 4 and will continue through Monday, Mar. 14. Every year, these tests are administrated by the Connecticut State Board of Education and are proctored to students in their sophomore year. If the school’s goal is not met, students in their sophomores are given the chance to retest as juniors.
This year, the tests will be taken over the course of seven days instead of last year’s six-day period of testing. “This change has nothing to do with all the snow days we had,” Assistant Principal Ari Rothman said. “We obviously cannot have too many tests on one day. Now, it’s a somewhat more consistent time block for students.”
Although the unexpected snow days this winter did not affect the test dates, they did affect the academic schedule. “If you look at the new schedule, some classes meet more than others. Specifically some science classes, because they need to make up missed lab days,” Mr. Rothman said.
If school is closed or there is a delay during CAPT week, the tests scheduled for that day will be made up at the end of the testing period. No matter what the case is, the testing must be finished in the time given by the Connecticut State Board of Education. “The state gives a testing window and it must be done in this time frame,” Mr. Rothman said. “If students miss any days in this time frame, they can make it up in the two weeks after the official testing takes place.”
Junior Adelyn Graf encourages everyone taking the tests to be at school and well rested. “It’s worth getting out of the way and passing so you don’t have to come back again the year after,” she said. “All you can really do is get a good night’s rest and show up ready to test.”
