With six meets behind them, the NCHS boys’ swim and dive team faced Greenwich, the number one team in the FCIAC, on Wednesday February 4. However, despite their efforts and fast times, the boys fell to Greenwich in a close meet.
Starting with the diving portion of the meet, junior Cameron Rhind took first place overall. After six dives, Cameron finished with a total of 285.85, gaining six points for the team. Senior Griffin Edmonds followed Cameron gaining an overall score of 243.40. Griffin placed third with three points added to the team.
During the swimming section of the meet, the boys’ efforts couldn’t bring them ahead of the Cardinals. the boys started their meet with the 200 medley relay. The team’s A-relay consisting of senior Trey Oehmler, junior Edward Rudman, and sophomores Peter Sloan and Luke Stewart, finished the relay with a time of 1:46:27 in second place. The relay gained four points for the team while the Cardinals took ten points with their first and third place relay.
Moving on to the freestyle, Charlie Adl placed first over Greenwich, giving the team a boost in their score. But from then on, the boys went back and forth with Greenwich.
The results were mixed all throughout the meet, with an intense swim for New Canaan in the 500 freestyle. Charlie Adl, along with freshmen Jackson Oehmler and Jake Ritz, gained the team first, second, and third place for the Rams. This was one of Charlie’s big wins for the meet, finishing the swim with an impressive time of 4:57:47. He finished 21 seconds before any other swimmers.
The 200 freestyle relay followed right after the 500, with three relay teams. Group one consisted of the junior power team consisting of Bhaskar Abhiraman, Charlie Adl, Matt Evans, and Edward Rudman,. Group two consisted of junior Dariush Amir-Aslani, senior co-captain Miles Turpin, freshman Richard Ettinger, and junior Graham Russell. Group one placed first. Beating out Greenwich by .04 of a second, and group two placed third finishing three seconds after the Cardinals. With these two wins, the Rams trailed by a small margin.
Despite their strong wins, the Rams fell short to the Cardinals in the 100 breaststroke. Greenwich placed first, second, and third overall, gaining 13 points for their team. As the Rams made their final efforts in the 400 freestyle relay, they placed second and third. However, with the Cardinals taking first place in the relay, they gained eight more points for their team while New Canaan only gained six.
The Rams’ deficit could not be overcome, as they fell to the Cardinals 100-86. However, they will have the chance to redeem themselves as they enter the end of the season.
