Armchair Athlete is back for another year of NCHS sports, bringing you the up-to-date news and analysis on your favorite Rams Athletes.
Our focus this week is the Rams Boys Hockey Team and their upcoming season. The team put together a stellar record last year, going 25-1, and 13-0 in the league. They contended all season for both the FCIAC and State titles, beating St. Joseph’s 4-3 for the FCIAC title, but falling in the state semifinals in a shootout to that same St. Joe’s team, 6-5. Now, the Rams look to have yet another great year with returning players Jake Granito and Dylan Hart being named co-captains for a team that promises to have several starters back from last year’s championship roster.
The Rams are looking to fill several big roles, with last season’s starting goalkeeper Tim Nowacki, team goals leader Reed Harper, and senior captains Henry Corcharan, Tom Kreiger, Brain Tohir, and Jimmy Joe Granito all graduating or leaving NCHS. In fact, of the twenty-eight man roster of last season, only about half are returning for this season. Granito is not worried.
At goalkeeper, the role is certainly a big one to fill, as Nowacki was a force at the goalkeeping position all of last year, with an average of 1.38 goals let up a game and 461 saves in over 1000 minutes of playing time. Luckily, junior Chris Koennecke looks more than up to the challenge. Posting an average 1.9 goals let up a game in a few hundred minutes of work and five goals let up in total, he looks to take the ice by storm.
Even though the season doesn’t start for a few more weeks, there are some exciting events coming up that involve the team. The most notable of these is the 32nd Annual Larry Tomaselli Alumni Game, where members of the high school team will take on alumni in a short exhibition match. Its at 6 p.m. on November 25, at the Darien Ice Rink. Donations are appreciated, (and tax deductible), and the team relies on them for ice time and equipment.
If you want to try out for the Rams Boys Ice Hockey Team, be sure to contact one of the captains, or Ms. Tomaselli in the Athletic office.
Stay tuned for next week’s post, where I will give a preview for the girls ice hockey team.
