In February, the CIAC made the decision to move boys golf from the spring to the fall. In golf, success depends on precision. Therefore, switching seasons includes several variables that both players and coaches have to consider.
“The CIAC has been trying to do it for many years,” Coach Bill Brown said. “Connecticut is the only state in New England that did not have boys golf in the fall, so the coaches of the other programs all thought it would be better if the CIAC moved it.”
“Athletes have been playing all summer so they are all ready to play,” Coach Brown said. “The condition of the courses as well as the weather are also much better in the fall. We’ve had to play in the snow during April matches in the past.”
Reigning first team all-FCIAC player and Senior Captain Marc DeGaetano said. “Coming off the summer the courses are already in shape, and it’s just much easier to get started.”
Playing tournaments during the summer definitely bettered my game for the fall season because my game is already in a good spot,’’ Marc said. “I’m very excited.”
‘’It’s definitely helpful because the courses are in better shape and I’ve been playing all summer so you know I’m more warmed up,” Senior Captain Sam Funk said. “In the spring, it’s 30 degrees and you haven’t hit a ball in a few months.’’
They are already seeing improvements in their game. “The move from spring to fall is going to be beneficial to our team,” Senior Captain Taylor Pinkernell said. “We’ve already played three or four matches and every single one of them we played much better than we did in the spring.”
“We have a lot of good underclassmen and a couple of good juniors so the future looks bright,’’ Sam said.
