The boys tennis team led by Junior Captain, Kevin Zou and Freshman star Jackson Mountford ended with a regular season record 10-5. Key wins over Trumbull and Westhill propelled the boys to the 4th seed in FCIACs and 6th seed in states. “ With new additions such as Jackson Mountford, and returning players such as myself and Nick Brillo, we feel confident that we can win both FCIAC’s and States this year”, captain Kevin Zou said.
The boys felt confident leading into FCIAC after ending the regular season on a three game winning streak. Facing Wilton in the first round, the boys felt confident they could turn it around after a 6-1 defeat the first time the two teams met. “ If we beat Wilton, I’m confident we can win it all”, Freshman Jackson Mountford said. The boys were defeated 6-1 once again against Wilton knocking them out of FCIAC’s in the first round. The boys looked on to states, saying “ This happened last year, we lost in the first round of FCIAC’s and still made it to the State Championship, who says we can’t do it again”, Junior Nick Brillo said.
In the State Championship the boys were ranked six out of eight teams to qualify. After defeating Cheshire and Amity 7-0 in the first two rounds of the tournament they advanced into the finals of the state tournament for the second year in a row. The boys had another match against Wilton for the third time this year. “ This time we are changing things up. Hopefully I can lock down one single and the rest of the team can find a way to win”, Freshman Jackson Mountford said. Although having high hopes to bring back a state championship, the boys dropped the match by a score of 6-1 for the third time this year.
After the year the boys will look on to the States Individual tournament where Jackson Mountford will be competing in the singles. Stay on the lookout for more updates on that tournament.
