For the past six years, every spring has brought a new season of ABC’s hit TV show, Lost, but Sunday May 23, we begin to say goodbye to it with its series finale. On Saturday March 23, there was a re-airing of the two hour pilot and a special showing of Jimmy Kimmel Live: Aloha to Lost at 12:00 a.m.  Tonight at 7:00 there will be a two-hour Lost retrospective, Lost: The Final Journey. Then from 9:00 to 11:30 will be the anticipated series finale.

Through its six seasons, the show has offered surprising new conflicts, characters and mysteries. For some, like sophomore Aubrey Kenefick, these complications have kept the story interesting. “The characters change each season, which keeps people hooked because there are always new ones,” she said. “The plot keeps people intrigued from season to season because there are a bunch of twists and turns. It makes it interesting to follow and creates one big reality.”

Others believe that the plot changes have started to get annoying over the years, making it all the better that the series is ending. “It’s been going on for far too long,” senior Eric Evensen said. “There are too many different side stories and its hard to keep track of it all.”

Though this final season was meant to wrap up some of these side-stories, some say that it has just created more. “It’s really the same as the other seasons: confusing, lots of mysteries, unanswered questions, etc,” Eric said.

Despite this, Lost viewers believe this season has really contributed to the story. “You understand the character development more and you understand the stories,” freshman Glen Wolyner said. “You see how the characters use the knowledge from their lives and put it into the show. It really shows how they put their personalities into the story.”

Now that it is ending, the evolution of the show is apparent. “This show went from being a great show about some people on an island, to something more,” sophomore Will Cromwell said. “They set everything up for this [finale], not one episode didn’t have a purpose. I can’t think of a single episode that didn’t have significance.”

For the past few weeks, theories have been created of what will happen in the finale based off of the events of the entire season. But some people, like Will, think that the show will bring surprises. “I expect the unexpected because that is what Lost is. I don’t think any of the theories will hold true,” he said.

There are high expectations for the much awaited season finale. “Because there are so many things that could happen, I don’t want some rip-off ending where somebody wakes up and it’s all a dream,” Aubrey said.

Even though many of its fans wish it would go on for more seasons, several also believe that Lost has reached its limit. “It’s ready to end,” Glen said. “I think they really stretched the story as far as it will go.”
