Last night marked the finale to the three-part Battle of the Bands Competitions at Peachwave. New Canaan High School’s sophomore trio, The Grassy Towels, came in second while freshman Eric Cohen’s band, The Verticals, came in first, winning the grand prize of $200.

Each band played a variety of music; The Verticals focused on Indie rock with music from the Arctic Monkeys and The Strokes, while The Grassy Towels played more classics like Elton John and The Beatles.

Freshman Erik Cohen, lead guitarist for The Verticals, is excited to use the prize money to benefit the band. “Now we will buy Nevan a good amp for our show coming up,” he said.

Sophomore Sam Klearman is the guitarist and vocalist for The Grassy Towels and believes that the experience of playing in the competition was valuable. “I thought we played okay, not out best but not too bad. We didn’t have as much time to practice as I would have liked in the week or two beforehand, but it happened,” he said. “Experience is always good and it was good to see The Verticals play, they deserved it for sure.”

Sam is excited to keep practicing for upcoming gigs. “We’ll keep on practicing, we’re playing in town during the winter at some point so we will probably do some pieces with a Christmas theme,” he said.

As for The Verticals, they too have an upcoming gig and are expanding their online presence. “We have a show coming up on December 19 at 7 pm in The Depot in Darien,” Erik said. “Our music is available online through our Facebook, Youtube, and Soundcloud.”
