If you drive on South Avenue, Oenoke Ridge Road, Smith Ridge Road, or Main Street, pay attention. These roads have been named the most dangerous in New Canaan by the New Canaan Police Department. “The speeds on most of these roads is above 30 mph, and people don’t even follow that,” School Resource Officer Roy Bentley said. “When you get farther out of town [the speed limit] goes over 45 mph and people go even faster.”

Critters crowd student entry

If you think handwritten cards, cookies, or gifts are too cliché for your friend’s birthday, there is another way to demonstrate how much you care- Critter Yard Cards. Critter Yard Cards are eight-foot tall wooden cutouts of characters from various movies and television shows. Attached to the character is a message that is personalized to read “Happy 18th Birthday Sam!” or “Happy Sweet Sixteen Olivia!” Over the course of this school year, this product has really taken hold among students, as barely a day goes by without Spongebob, Homer Simpson, or Bugs Bunny adorning the entrance to the parking lot.

Junior Dan LoRusso had a possible explanation for the trend. “I think that after a lot of people saw them they liked the idea more and wanted to do it for their friends,” he said.

The assembly will run from 10:30-12:30, but according to Social Studies Department Chair Richard Webb, it may run a little longer. “This is probably going to the longest assembly yet, so we may be excusing kids from 10-1,” Mr. Webb said.

Because the district was forced to cancel school for three days, from March 15-18, these days will now have to be made up at the end of the year…
