9th annual Memorial Day assembly brings greater meaning to the weekend

On May 27, NCHS hosted its ninth annual Memorial Day Veterans’ Symposium in the auditorium to honor of all the veterans in New Canaan and surrounding areas.

The assembly covered periods one and six and was a great success. Students from all grades came to honor the veterans. “This has been our biggest event ever, with over 180 veterans in attendance who fought in WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq,” secretary Lynda Pescatello said.

Spring break disrupts important AP preparation

The long-anticipated April break promises to be a time of fun and relaxation. One week of great weather with no classes, no homework, and time spent with friends and family. However, for students enrolled in AP classes, spring break means that one week of precious classroom-review time has been taken away less than three weeks before the test.

Holocaust survivor urges students to stand up for justice

Judith Altmann, one of the few remaining Holocaust survivors, spoke to students on Thursday, Jan. 10, thanks to the efforts of history teacher Jen Fine. The assembly ran through periods two and seven, and students attending included juniors taking U.S. History and sophomores in Global History II.

Ms. Fine met Ms. Altmann when, as a student teacher at West Hill High School, she was asked to find a Holocaust survivor to speak to students.

A Day of Thanks

In 1621, the pilgrims celebrated the first Thanksgiving, expressing their gratitude through celebration for their new homes, their bountiful harvest, and the peace with their native neighbors. The first Thanksgiving was characterized by games, competition, music and food.
