Part 6 – Taking the next step: finding Mr. Pavia’s replacement

With the announcement of Principal Tony Pavia’s retirement on November 11, the school district has quickly begun the search for his successor.

In a follow-up press release by the New Canaan Public School District, it was made clear that the Board of Education — along with a committee of directors, high school department chairs, administrators, parents, guidance counselors, and teachers — is undertaking an extensive search process in order to find his replacement.

Generation Y. We’re hot, tech-savvy, impatient, globalized, spendthrifts, and we’re also suffering from Peter Pan disorder? Huh? Yes, Wikipedia has recently enlightened me that we’re also called the Peter Pan generation, because just like the characters in J.M. Barrie’s tale, we just don’t seem to want to grow up.

It’s that time of the year again. The sun slowly recedes, Uggs return from their reverse hibernation, Kleenex sales make a noticeable spike, and my mom nags me to get the flu shot (to which I usually scour the internet for horror stories of obscure allergic reactions as “evidence” that our doctor is actually being overdramatic, really, I will be fine without being punctured by the primitive harpoon the nurse calls a needle).

When I was younger, the only life guidance I needed was from the game MASH. It predicted I would have 1,000 kids, own a red Ferrari, live in a shack, and work at McDonalds. Sweet life, no?

Flash forward a decade – through the pubescent awkwardness of middle school; the procrastination time hole that is Facebook; and the development of a coffee addiction…and Voila! A quintessential high school student!

Recently, Hollywood has been swept by a flood of pro-animal support, as big industry names like Carrie Underwood and Brad Pitt join the ranks of vegetarians and vegans. Whether or not kids view these individuals as dietary role models is debatable. However, an increasing number of teens now consider themselves vegetarians…
