It’s been a hectic couple of weeks, to say the least. Prom, homework, a test almost every day, prom, AP test/SAT preparation, new Journalism staff for next year, summer program applications, and have we mentioned prom? With all of this going on, we’ve plunged full speed ahead into the Journalism new cycle. We have an extraordinary amount of stories for this cycle, both for online and print–overmedication, dealing with college rejection, cheating, watching movies online… and the Journalism class has been scrambling around trying to get everything set for initial due dates on Friday.

In the past few months, there have been a number of drug-related disciplinary actions. In one case, there was a drug-related expulsion, and in another, a drug-related punishment was downgraded. On Feb. 28, a student was arrested from a November charge of selling marijuana.

“In my opinion, there has been an inordinate number of suspensions relating to marijuana, whether it is an issue due to direct use or something we found out or having to do with the police,” Principal Tony Pavia said. “We’re seeing a marijuana that’s different than the ‘old’ drug; it’s not just a harmless teenage experiment.”

Signups for AP tests began Monday, Feb. 28 in the College and Career Center and continue through Friday, Mar. 4. Registration requires a check of $95 per test made out to “NCHS Guidance.”

Students taking AP courses benefit from taking AP exams. “It would be in a student’s best interest to take the exam[s] because if they don’t, they won’t receive the weighted [course] grade on their transcript,” Sue Carroll, Coordinator of the College and Career Center, said.

Wandering around the school hallways, freshman Nicolette Lathouris attempts to find her TV Broadcasting classroom, a classroom located far from all her others. She begins to walk faster, fearing that she will be late. It’s her first day in the high school, and she’s completely lost. Nicolette asks random kids and teachers for help and finally manages to find her way to the correct classroom, where she tries to slip in silently, late on her first day.

Nicolette’s situation is one that many freshmen have shared on their first day, or even first week or two upon entering the high school. The high school is bigger than Saxe, and the entire shift is quite a change.
