The annual Summer Art Show is one of the many delights that the school’s art department has to offer. This long standing tradition gives both students and staff the opportunity to submit artwork and see their pieces grace the hallways.

For nine years, Art teacher Jennifer Sinski has played a significant role in the preparation of the art show. Right before the beginning of school, all students, faculty and staff received an email getting word out about the opening entries of the exhibition. Everything from drawings, paintings, and photographs to sculpture, jewelry and film are available for submission. Once all submissions are entered, they are then arranged in the Main Lobby art gallery. “This is a very time consuming process, but gives each work a professional appearance,” said Ms. Sinski. “Preparing, curating, hanging and executing the exhibition is a huge process that takes teamwork and the help of students and staff”

Junior Madelyn Casey is one of the many contributors to the exhibition this year. “I will be submitting two digital collages this year,” she said. “I really loved how they turned out, and I’m really proud of them,” Madelyn said. The exhibition centers around pieces that were worked on over the summer, allowing students in particular to show their creativity outside of school. “Our community has a lot to say, and what better way to express ourselves, communicate with one another and share our experiences than through our art,” Ms. Sinski said.

Freshman Selena Lee, another first time contributor, will be submitting a photograph she took of her younger sister at the Maritime Aquarium. “She was standing in front of the shark tank near one of the circular windows,”  Serena said. “In the moment, I thought it was such a great frame.” Though this is her first time submitting her work for display, she has in the past submitted to  a private competition. “It makes me feel very proud but also very nervous because I’ve never shared my artwork so publicly before,” she said. “I’m typically a very private person, never sharing my artwork with anyone outside of my family, so this is a very big shift for me”

For artists, putting their work on display and opening pieces up to criticism is extremely nerve-racking, but it can also play as the conclusion of the creative process. “Sharing your experiences and skills through art takes courage and all of the submissions in the show come from students and staff who have taken a risk in sharing their artwork for others to see.” Ms. Sinski said.

The annual exhibition will also feature works from a select group of seniors who participated in summer art classes with support from the Fritz Eager Foundation’s Bernice Dobkin Hall Summer Art Scholarship. “These works will have special labels for viewer’s to learn more about their summer experience,” Ms. Sinski said. Many students and staff had the opportunity to travel to unique locations around the world, submitting pieces of their point-of-view through photography.

The submission deadline closed on Thursday, September 9th. Displays began the 15th and will continue untilNovember 10th. “It’s an opportunity to see the talents of other students outside of academics, which I really admire. There’s so much recognition for academic talent, so I think something that highlights creativity is really great” Serena said. , “It’s so surreal to walk in the halls and then see a photograph and think to myself ‘Oh yeah, I took that!’” she said.Don’t miss the various unique pieces at the exhibition this year. For the next month and a half, the entrance of our building lights up with walls full of Art, displaying what artistic faculty, staff and students organized.
