If you’re like me, the youngest child way past your arts and crafts days, then you’ve probably never tried one of the Internet’s many “do it yourself” or “DIY” projects. I’ve always found them to be too intricate, time consuming, or unrealistic. However, finding myself with empty pockets and a long list of people I need to get gifts for, I’ve turned to the Internet to help me put together a few crafty Christmas DIY presents.
In this first DIY, I picked something that seemed creative but manageable: an ornament. Found on Buzzfeed.com’s “62 impossibly adorable ways to decorate this Christmas”, I though this little cotton ball bear ornament was too cute to resist, so I tried it out.
Since the directions didn’t give me any supplies, I decided I would need scissors, hot glue (which I substituted with gorilla glue), cotton balls, some type of ribbon, and an ornament. Easy!
Just because assembling the necessary supplies was easy did not mean assembling this little guy was a walk in the park. I quickly discovered the horrors of combining gorilla glue with fluffy cotton, as it got stuck to just about every surface it touched and coated my hands in a disgusting layer of moist fluff. Anyways, if you’re looking for something that’s not too time consuming, then this was perfect. Despite my struggles with Gorilla Glue, I thought the finished product came out even more adorable than Buzzfeed’s expectation.
Some substitutions I made were his bowtie and his nose. I decided I didn’t have the nimbleness or time to make a minuscule bowtie, and I also just really liked the idea of a heart-shaped nose. I was really pleased with my first DIY project, and believe-it-or-not, I even put him on our tree as an early gift to my mom. If I can do it, so can you, so stay tuned to see a few more holiday gifts!
