A small business with a big heart

More and more students have been using their imaginations to develop businesses for the betterment of society. Every small act of kindness inspires others to give back and spread positivity. The best part about the growing population of entrepreneurs is that many of them are oriented around goals for the betterment of society. Rather than profiting off of their own talents, students are finding ways to serve others through the gifts they have been given.

Sage Fuhrman, junior at New Canaan High School, created her business Sweet Krackerz. After running a club her freshman year called the Mitzvah (a meritorious deed) club, she made sweets for people who she felt needed some love. With some feedback from her customers, she found that there was one treat that left everybody wanting more. Matzah. This is an unleavened flatbread which is part of Jewish cuisine. Sage adds toffee and chocolate to the cracker along with different toppings to add some color and sweetness.

Instead of keeping the treat just to the club, Sage decided she wanted to give it to more people, so she thought it would be best if she sold it at a farmer’s market. The process wasn’t easy. Fuhrman had to obtain a license and a permit to sell. She made the crackers every week and sold them at the Wilton Farmer’s Market. Everyday that she sold them, she would save the unsold Matzah so that she could continue her clubs tradition of giving the sweet treat to those in need.

Despite COVID-19’s impact on many people’s small businesses, Sage persevered and is now planning to host her Sweet Krackerz at the Norwalk and Fairfield Farmer’s markets in addition to the current sales at the Wilton Farmer’s Market.

Some of the places that Sage gives the left-over Matzah includes, Bright View Senior Living (New Canaan), New Canaan EMS, New Canaan Fire and Police Department, NCHS, New England Pediatrics, PAWS (pet animal welfare society), Waveny Life Care Network, Wilton Chamber of Commerce, The Residence at Westport, and Make-A-Wish Connecticut.

Make sure to go check out the Sweet Krackerz at the farmer’s markets named above! The businesses flavors include sprinkles, oreo, s’mores, heath bar, and sugar cookie.

Although these times seem to be nearing the end, we still need to remember the sense of community we have gained from this experience. Uniting together to support others in their good deeds helps to better the community as a whole. Sweet Krackerz is the perfect business to support as you are giving to those around you and rewarding yourself with a little treat.
