As their last show of the season, the theatre department put on the musical 9 to 5. Seniors Avery Russey, Charlotte Jensen, and Erica Angeletta, as well as Junior Andy Dooley led the plot as it followed three women’s experiences in the workplace.
Senior Erica Angiletta, who has been doing theater since her freshman year, has always foud the last show of the year to be impactful. “The spring show is always pretty emotional since it’s the seniors’ last show, so it’s like a passing of the torch,” she said. “Everyone really rallies together so I’m really excited for 9 to 5.”
9 to 5 also presents messages regarding gender equality. “The story is set in 1979, so it is not modern day, but it has a lot of important conversations about sexism and women in the workplace,” Erica said. “I think that through comedic and serious scenes, the show really gets a strong message across.”
Senior Avery Russey sees the music as a highlight of the show. “The music is super upbeat and fun; Dolly Parton wrote all of it.” she said. “I especially love ‘9 to 5’ because that’s the title song, so it’s very famous.”
From a technical aspect, production of the show relied heavily on collaboration. “Without it, the show does not go on. We have student actors, designers, stage managers, running crew, assistant directors, assistant music directors all working with the professionals towards the same overall goal… to tell a great story.” Chris Myers, the Director of Production, said.
This year, the theatre department produced five shows total. And so, 9 to 5 was the finale to a year full of theater. “The aspect I’m looking to share with the audience the most, is the journey of these three amazing women as they overcome the odds and discover their strengths and courage by working together.” Chris said.
