60 Minutes Executive Producer Jeff Fager addressed the 2010-2011 Courant staff yesterday and discussed the process of creating a fair and multidimensional news story. He spoke in depth about the 60 Minutes website and how the company is looking to become more interactive with the viewer via new technologies like the iPad.

Using the recent 60 Minutes story “Blowout: The Deepwater Horizon Disaster” which aired last Sunday as his context, Mr. Fager discussed integral journalistic principles such as fairness in reporting. He also showed the Courant staff the story “Football Island” as an example of soft news to contrast the more serious subject matter of the oil spill.

The Courant staff hopes to integrate Mr. Fager’s advice in our work next year in an effort to continuously improve the quality of work both in print and online.
