Tomorrow, the Varsity Girl’s Hockey Team will be hosting a “Family Free Skate,” from 6:30-8, at Terry Connors Ice Rink in Stamford.
The team is selling tickets for $10 throughout the week, however, tickets will also be sold at the door for $10.
The Free Skate is the hockey team’s main fundraiser for the year. Junior tri-captain Jana Persky explained the purpose of the fundraiser. “Since hockey is an expensive sport, with ice time costing up to $450 an hour, players are responsible for more than $20,000. Hopefully, the fundraiser will offset some of the fees parents have to pay,” Jana said.
Buying a ticket automatically enters the buyer in a raffle. Donated prizes include an iTouch, Ripa sandals, and a FOX DVD set.
The event will include music and snacks sold at a bake sale. The goal is to attract all types of people from families with younger kids to high schoolers who want to skate with friends. Senior tri-captain Shelby Barada explained the past success of the event. “We did really well last year — we had a lot of high schoolers come, and we had a lot of other girl’s sports teams supporting us. It was really family oriented and it was fun for kids to skate around with us and to help them learn how to skate and just for them to see what the high school hockey program is like,” she said.
Shelby also hopes that the event will also encourage more girls to join the hockey program. “We are really focusing on families and the little kids that might be interested in playing hockey in the future, especially the girls,” she said. “To try to build the program, we have been working with girls from the Winter Club to get them excited so they will play for our team later on.”
In addition to the Free Skate on Saturday, the Girls Hockey Team is also hosting a MTV “Jersey Shore” themed Outback dance, tonight. Tickets have been sold earlier this week at lunch and will be also sold today for $10. Tickets are $15 at the door.
