Learning something new from something old in Turkey

“You can wear shorts there?” the older lady from New Jersey said to me as we sat on the plane heading to Turkey. “I’ve brought only long clothes since it’s a Muslim country.” For as long as I have been coming to Turkey, my family and I have always met tourists who were surprised about these kinds of cultural norms. In Turkey, not every woman wears a headscarf and even though the food may look unappetizing and mysterious, it’s actually really good.

Junior Harrison Miller chronicles experience at BUTI summer camp

When most students think of “band camp,” usually one of two scenarios emerge. The first being a clumsy but content marching band, clad in unflattering ruffles. The second, a certain scene from a certain nineties cult classic. However, it just so happens the Boston University Tanglewood Institute (BUTI), junior Harrison Miller’s summer program of choice, does not meet any of these criteria. In fact, BUTI is the most prestigious summer orchestra program in the world. Under the guidance of the elite Boston Symphony Orchestra and other professionals, BUTI is an artistic haven, driven by the passion and skill of those who attend. From a 7:30 a.m. wake up everyday to many music-filled late nights, it’s really quite the experience.

Students work for array of summer jobs

When school is let out for summer break, students are relieved at the low pressure the two months of vacation have to offer. Whether they spend the break sitting by the pool or training for sports, students take advantage of the time to recharge for the upcoming school year. This summer, some students enjoyed filling up their time with a job or volunteer opportunity.

NCHS finally opened its doors to students on Tuesday, September 6, after an extended week of summer due to Hurricane Irene. We had been busy assembling the news section in preparation for September long before August 31, the original NCPS start date in 2011. Not discouraged by the storm, the faculty and students had high spirits about meeting their teachers, adjusting to their schedule and getting back into the routine of waking up at 6:30 every morning. September has provided much material for our section.

Two students voyage overseas to Africa and Europe

While many students’ summers are filled with time consuming jobs or days at the beach, some privileged teens are jet setting around the world gaining experiences of a lifetime. They took the time to find programs outside of school that allowed them to travel and focus in on their specific interests. Senior Jackie Trager reflected on her trip with her family to three different countries in Africa.
