Yael Naim, Vedera, and Catherine Feeny

Whitney Gulden

Today in honor of midterms and my minor concussion that turned me against louder music, I’m going to give you a few songs from my iPod that are more low key and relaxing.

YaelNaim
Anyone remember a song called New Soul that was crazy overplayed in early 2008?  After being used in a Mac ad it became a top ten hit, but almost no one listened to other songs by Yael Naim. This singer/songwriter/goddess is Franco-Israeli and has the most enchanting voice.  Here is a live version of the recorded song Far Far that you can check out on iTunes or where ever you kids get your music from, Youtube USA doesn’t have the official video. She sounds even better live than recorded with her perfectly clear voice. New Soul may have been her only hit, but its only one of her incredible songs.

Next up is this new band from Kansas City that is getting more popular by the day after the huge success of their single Satisfy  (it was free on iTunes for a week).  Check out their music video here. Unlike most of the singles of the week, this one actually has a solid album to back it up that was released in October. The album called Stages is the third album made by the four person band. Vedera has been on tour since August, but they’re on break until February when they start up again even hitting up Philly’s Electric Factory on March 1st.

Lastly on the agenda for today is another pretty much unknown song by Catherine Feeny called Mr. Blue.  Kindof a strange music video with all the balloons… but she’s artsy so its probably… metaphorical? Anyways, she’s a solo artist who writes her own songs, has three albums since 2003. Mr. Blue is the 2007 single from her 2006 album Hurricane Glass, a short and sweet song that’s been used in a handful of movies.
Once again, my email is guldew@mac.com, send me any music you’d like me to listen to for the chance to get it reviewed or ignored. Happy midterms everyone.
