The Raveonettes

The Raveonettes

Whitney Gulden

Three songs by The Ravonettes are a long way from their home in Copenhagen, Denmark appearing in a recent episode of Gossip Girl and Nicholas Sparks’s latest book turned movie The Last Song (yes, the one written for Miley Cyrus).  All three of the songs are from The Ravoenette’s latest album (their fourth) In and Out of Control released back in October. Gossip Girl featured clips of the singles Suicide and The Last Dance, while The Last Song used Heart of Stone on the movie’s soundtrack. Because of this media exposure the songs have become the top three most popular songs by The Raveonettes on iTunes. The fourth (and fifth) most popular song is Dead Sound from the third Raveonettes album Lust Lust Lust, which was featured in Drew Barymore’s 2009 film directing debut Whip It.

Personal favorite: Last Dance because the lyrics come through the background music much more clearly than most Ravonettes songs.  A bit of background shamelessly learned from The Ravonette’s website, the duo of Sune Rose Wagner and Sharin Foo consider themselves an old school rock band although they are also called alternative, surf, noise, indie, and garage rock. The name “Raveonettes” is a reference to “Rave on!”, a song covered by The Ronnetes (a 1960s girl band) from the original 1958 version by Sonny West (a 1950s Texas rocker).

The real charm of The Ravonettes I must say though is that they are a clear flashback to the ‘50s and ‘60s. With old school beats combined with electric mixing, The Raveonettes are a sweet diversion from normal categories of music, adding variety to radio waves from Denmark to the USA.
