The week precedes the annual homecoming game and dance that will take place next weekend.

Spirit week will kick off on Monday with Color for Cause day. Freshmen will be wearing purple for pancreatic cancer awareness, sophomores will be wearing yellow to support U.S. troops, juniors will be wearing white for lung cancer awareness and seniors will be wearing pink to support breast cancer awareness. The day was implemented last year, and is intended to make the student body aware of these causes. “Color for a Cause day is really effective,” Vice Principal Ari Rothman said. “People are actually focusing on doing something constructive, so it’s crucial that we continue it.”

Tuesday is High Society day. Junior Caroline St. George uses the day as an opportunity to change up her typical school attire, “It’s really fun to dress up, which isn’t something I do often at school,” she said. Students will show up to school wearing their Sunday best, or maybe take the preppy route. Either way, make sure you keep it classy.

Wednesday is Costume day. Some students show up in large groups, all dressed the same, or in individual costumes. Sophomore Miles Turpin is excited to get together with his friends, “Clone day is a chance to let loose and have some fun,” he said. “It’s the one day a year where we get to be crazy in school.”

Thursday is Turn Back the Clock day, when students will travel back in time and dress according to their designated decade. Freshmen will don ‘50s apparel, sophomores go hippy for the ’60s, juniors show off ‘70s attire and seniors will bust out their ‘80s leotards and track suits. Senior Joanna Baran is anticipating the day herself. “I’m most excited for Turn Back the Clock Day because ‘80s is so big for seniors, I’ve been anticipating it since freshman year.”

Friday is Red and Black day, a chance for students to show their school spirit by sporting red and black apparel. Commonly worn are New Canaan jerseys and uniforms. The school day on Friday will come to an end with the annual pep rally held on Dunning Stadium. “Red and black day is definitely the most important spirit day; the entire student body can represent our school and get excited for homecoming weekend,” Junior Student Coalition member Isabel Taben said. Each varsity fall sports team will be performing a dance on the field to music of their choice. Teams are encouraged to show enthusiasm and originality while creating their dances; it has proven to be a popular event for the pep rally.

On Friday, the spirit week festivities continue with the annual bonfire. The bonfire will be held at 6 p.m. at the high school, near the tennis courts and entrance to Dunning Stadium. Snacks and drinks will be available to enjoy and live music will be performed by NCHS students.

Spirit week comes to an end on Saturday, with homecoming football game and dance. The afternoon game is at Dunning Stadium, and will be against the Danbury Mad Hatters. On Saturday night, the homecoming dance will be held in the high school gym. There will be some changes this year as the homecoming king and queen will be crowned at the end of the night, and students will have the opportunity to enter their dance tickets into a raffle to win prizes. Additionally, the varsity sports team with the highest attendance percentage will be awarded a prize.
