It is that time of the year again when the submissions begin pouring in for the annual NCHS Poetry Fest that is scheduled to take place on Thursday April 26 in the Wagner room at 7:00 pm. This year over 60 applicants submitted poems to English teacher Kristen Brown, which is the most submissions the Poetry Fest has ever received. With so many submissions and students are looking forward to reading their original poems and hearing their peers express their creative abilities.

Ms. Brown, who has organized the event since she first started working at NCHS, looks forward to seeing the variety of applicants’ poems that have been submitted this year, including a great number of freshman poets. “What I love about the Poetry Fest is that it feels like a celebration of student writing on all different levels,” Ms. Brown said. “There are so many freshman students that have submitted poems this year that have just started as student poets, which is really exciting. It is an event for all grade levels and for all students of all abilities which is what I love about it.”

Senior Miles Turpin, who won “best poem” last year at the event, has submitted a poem again this year and looks forward to seeing his peers and new underclassmen faces at the event. “Everyone is really candid and you can just tell that their is a really good environment where people can share their poems that might be pretty personal to them,” he said. “It astounded me to hear the upperclassmen read their poems as a freshmen, and it would be great to inspire the underclassmen with that same feeling this year as a senior.”

If you’re looking to see NCHS students express their creativity and listen to your peers share their work, Poetry Fest is the place to be this Thursday. If you can’t make it, stay tuned to the NCHS Courant instagram and twitter to see a follow-up about the performances and awards given at the event.
