The Student Coalition held a meeting on Sept. 30, marking the first time this year the coalition met with all its new freshman delegates. The freshman class elected Katie Kuberra as Class President, Ashley Feldman as Social President, and Harrison Besser as Political president.

Katie Kuberra said, “the meeting primarily consisted of planning for the upcoming homecoming week. We’ve been planning the bonfire, the three spirit days, and the dance”. This year the coalition is more concentrated on “enhancing the traditions the students have enjoyed in past years” said Kuberra. The coalition also counts Homecoming Queen and King votes on top of planning for the entire week of festivities.

Student Coalition Advisor, Mr. Atilla Levai, said, “A lot of things are locked in. After homecoming in three weeks, there is the Turkeybowl fundraiser the weekend of Thanksgiving, then the Holiday Dance in December for fundraising for Toys for Tots”. The Turkeybowl and the Holiday dance are both two big fundraisers the school has participated in during the past years.

Enhancing the old isn’t all the coalition is preparing to do. For the first time ever this year, the Student Coalition is, “working on planning the first ever Homecoming T-shirt,” said Dolly Meckler. The coalition is also interested in, “incorporating a competition into the new school rules about cleanup in the lunch room,” said sophomore delegate Jenny Crandall. Student Coalition President Dolly Meckler is leading the new school-cleanup program.

A couple of weeks into the school-wide cleanup, Dolly said, “The lounge is already becoming cleaner after 3rd lunch. I really hope people continue getting up to throw away their trash during lunch, it’d be great to make cleaning the lounge and keeping our school clean a habit.”

On Dolly’s leadership, Levai said, “I hope she can develop the school’s spirit and get students to participate.”

Dolly hopes for similar school unity from the students this year. “I hope that people get into the school spirit, not only by keeping the lounge clean and participating in homecoming activities, but also by being nice to everyone”.

An encouraging, welcoming school environment can certainly help school spirit. In fact, “If the students can embody school spirit in their attitudes towards one another, then school spirit with inevitably spread into homecoming activities, keeping the lounge clean, and other upcoming activities,” said Dolly.
