Athlete Profile: Anton Adding

Molly Keshin, Editor-in-Chief @mollykCourant For any student that is new to a school, it must be hard to adjust to the unfamiliar surroundings and assimilate yourself into certain teams or groups. As for senior Anton Adding, he wasn’t just coming from a different school district – he was coming from a different country. This summer, Anton came to New Canaan as part of the exchange student program so that he could be on the boys’ hockey team, just as his father did when he was in high school. His sister and several friends have also participated in the program, and…

Athlete Profile: Alexandra Poteet

Joelle Anselmo, Reporter @janselmoCourant Senior Ali Poteet has made her mark as a synchronized swimmer who competes outside the high school. She showed her dedication to the sport by swimming at Nationals with her team and winning gold with her partner at the Junior Olympics. How do you balance school, social and synchronized swimming? In past years, I struggled to balance school and SS, because the schedule is very demanding. I swim the most routines out of everyone on the team, so it’s over twenty hours of routines and conditioning. I think transitioning into high school is hard enough and…

Girls’ ice hockey falls to Fairfield co-op in overtime in rematch

Katie Tan, Reporter @ktanCourant Coming into the game with a record of 3-2-3, the girl’s ice hockey team took on Fairfield Warde/Ludlowe co-op for the second time this season after beating them 5-1 earlier in the year. However, this time they weren’t so lucky as they fell, 3-2 on their home ice at Darien Ice House. The Rams carried a 2-1 lead until the last five minutes of the game when Fairfield scored to tie it up. The game then went into overtime where the Falcons were able to score in the first few minutes. New Canaan’s junior co-captain, Gianna Bruno, scored…

Girls Hockey MVPs

Caroline Knightly, Senior Editor @knightlycourant With the winter sports season in full swing, all teams are welcoming new players, whether they be freshmen, sophomores, juniors and even seniors. For seniors Alex Esposito,  Maddie Smith and Hannah Socci, they choose to fill their winter schedule with 5:30 am practices and lugging around hockey bags for the first time ever. Rather than sleeping in and keeping their backpack as light as possible as a senior, they let the stench and weight of their hockey bags takeover all for JV hockey. Amongst all the girls, this shows dedication and instructs people how to…

The Spanglers sprint to Providence

Campbell Armstrong, Reporter @carmcourant While track was mostly just an after school activity to fill their time, seniors Henry and Wyatt Spangler took their talent to a new level when they recently committed to run Division I track at Providence College. “I started playing at the start of freshman year,” Henry recalled. “I was playing lacrosse in middle school but I didn’t really want to pursue it in high school.” Wyatt and Henry agreed that sprinting was their forte, considering they were naturally very fast. Henry took on pole vaulting when he realized that sprinting went hand in hand. “I pole…
